It’s Official – Autumn has Landed!

Today is the September equinox, when day and night are depressingly the same length.  It is also officially the end of Summer and start of Autumn so we are on the very slippery (watch out for those leaves) slope towards Winter ..

Many will start waxing lyrical about golden hues  “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” – thank you Mr Keats!  I, meanwhile, sink in to a melancholy frame of mind mourning the demise of a flower filled garden, light nights and warm days.  Autumn is that no-man’s land between Summer and Christmas, it has no bank holidays, is usually dark and wet, and turns the garden in to a mud bath making it impossible to rake up the darned ‘golden hued’ leaves!  It is, in fact, raining cats and dogs as I type.

This year I’m adopting the Danish tradition of Hygge.  I’ve stocked up on candles, soft woollen blankets and lashings of hot chocolate to see me through to the first daffodil. For now, though, I can only dream of flowers to come.  Now where did I put that seed catalogue …

    1. Another reason Autumn is not my favourite, soon be time to turn the heating on! I’ll just have to put a log burning stove on my Christmas list to Santa ..

  2. I know what you mean – for years I hated this time of year, the lower sun, the freshness in the air, the crinkling leaves …it always reminded me of the ‘back to school’ feeling, which was never my favourite emotion!

    In recent years [since 2010] I started taking part in a project called Learn Somethign New Everyday [created by shimelle.com]. It basically does what it says on the tin – you find a lesson in each day during September and document it. Maybe it’s a coincidence … but ever since, September has become more about documenting my lessons [I choose a different creative, paper crafting, format each year eg. collage etc] and less about remembering how much I dreaded school!!

    This year this quote, from Thomas Merton, found me … and I like to think it too will help me embrace Autumn once and for all! “October is a fine and dangerous season in America. It is dry and cool and the land is wild with red and gold and crimson, and all the lassitudes of August have seeped out of your blood, and you are full of ambition.”

    1. Do you know, you’ve just hit the nail on the head! I can’t tell you how much I use to dread going back to school after the Summer holidays. I think that has stayed with me all these years.

      I like the idea of dedicating a month to do something different, to be creative, to learn something. Thanks so much for your comments, it’s got me thinking 🙂

  3. Love your take on Autumn! You have The Big Bang Theory on TV there too? Such a funny program but I admit that Sheldon kind of makes me mad. He is incredibly irritating at times. There is a new episode out now or coming soon. Have a heaping helping of Thanksgiving!

    1. We do have Big Bang over here, it’s one of my favourite shows. Sheldon would drive me insane if I had to live or work with someone like that. Thank you for Thanksgiving, any tips on how to get the best out of it?

      1. Spend as much time with family as possible. Since we aren;t in Michigan anymore where most of the family is, we spend the day by ourselves which is just fine too. And be sure to leave plenty of room for Pumpkin Pie in your tummy. mmmmmmmmmm

      1. I can’t tell you how typically British a question that is. And there’s a face that goes with people tasting it for the first time–a kind of pinched, this-is-going-to-be-awful-but-I’m-too-polite-to-turn-it-down look. But it is good, and best with whipped cream. It’s not a massively sweet pie (if it’s made right), but it’s definitely a dessert. Have you ever had courgette bread or cake? It’s not exactly like that, but it might give you some sense of the possibility.

        Don’t put it on the compost heap. Just fax it over here.

      2. Squeezing it through the fax as we speak … It’s actually been a really bad year for pumpkins so could be a shortage and a fight to get your hands on a decent one. Enjoy!
