A Spit in the Ocean

For some time I’ve wanted to visit the beach at Spurn Point.  Spurn is a sandy ‘spit’ that sticks out from mainland UK in to the North Sea, a wilderness and nature sanctuary.  What has stopped me until now is the tide can wash over the road cutting it off from the mainland – not a comforting thought for someone afraid of the sea!!

In my quest to Feel the Fear but crack on with it anyway, I decided it was now or never.  So armed with a tidal timetable, a camera and a prayer I plucked up courage and set off on a mini adventure…

The journey there isn’t particularly scenic but along the way I passed the Humber Bridge, when opened in 1981 it was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the World – a fact I didn’t know until pointed out to me whilst on a ferry ride round Manhattan Island, New York one holiday.  Seems they have a big one too – but not as big as our’s.  Not often we can say that!

Part of the road running along the spit was washed away a couple of years ago (help!) so the only way to reach the end is to abandon your car half way and walk.  Here goes …

The sand is pale and soft and runs all round the spit which makes for an amazing walk.  Long grass borders the beach creating sand dunes and safe nesting sites for a host of bird life – it also looked lovely as it danced in the sea breeze.

The old lighthouse hasn’t worked for some years but is due to be given a new lease of life this year and re-opened as a visitor’s centre.  Meanwhile it provided a photo opportunity.

Half way round the spit and I found a scenic spot to sit   – time for my bacon sandwich.

Found a great piece of driftwood on the way back to the car which I just managed to squeeze in via the sunroof.

I did it, now I’m getting out of here!
